Sync Your Credentials with ABCAC

If you already hold an IC&RC credential through another member board, you can sync your certification with ABCAC to maintain continuity and recognition in Arizona. This ensures your certification remains active, transferable, and aligned with ABCAC's standards and reciprocity network.

Certification Information

For each certification, we will provide detailed information, including requirements, application steps, study materials, and any other necessary details to help you through the process.


Recertification requires completion of Ethics and Cultural Diversity education, along with continuing education (CE) in the appropriate field of your certification. When submitting your recertification package, be sure to include copies of your CE certificates.

Important Note:

  • HIV/AIDS education is only required for your initial certification and is not needed for recertification.

If you are interested in obtaining an IC&RC International Certificate, ABCAC now processes these requests directly. The certificate is tied to your current IC&RC-level credential and is not a stand-alone certification.

  • How often do I need to renew my certification?

    ABCAC certifications must be renewed every two years to remain valid. Your renewal date is based on the date of your last certification approval.

  • What is the renewal fee?

    The renewal fee for all ABCAC certifications is $150, which covers application processing and two additional years of certification.

  • What are requirements for certification renewal?

    The requirements for certification renewal with the Arizona Board for the Certification of Addiction Counselors (ABCAC) are as follows:


    ✅ General Renewal Requirements (All Credentials):

    Submit the Recertification Application – Complete the appropriate renewal packet for your credential.


    Pay the $150 Renewal Fee – Covers application processing and two more years of certification.


    Complete 40 Hours of Continuing Education (CEUs):


    Must be related to substance abuse and/or behavioral health.


    3 hours in Ethics (required)


    3 hours in Cultural Diversity (required)


    Up to 20 hours may be in-service training, if verified by your supervisor.


    Supervisor Letter of Recommendation – If you're employed, this should be completed by your current supervisor. If you're in private practice, a professional peer may complete it.


    Remain in Good Ethical Standing – No disciplinary actions or violations of the ABCAC Code of Ethics during the current certification period.


    📌 Additional CEU Requirements by Credential:

    Credential Additional Required CEUs

    CCS (Clinical Supervisor) 6 hours in Clinical Supervision (in addition to 3 in Ethics + 3 in Cultural Diversity)

    CPRS (Peer Recovery Specialist) 6 hours in Ethics/Professional Responsibility + 3 hours in Cultural Diversity (from the 20-hour total)

  • What documents do I need for renewal?

    To renew your certification with the Arizona Board for the Certification of Addiction Counselors (ABCAC), you will need to submit the following documents:


    ✅ Required Documents for Certification Renewal:

    Completed Recertification Application


    Use the correct renewal packet for your credential (e.g., CAC, CADAC, AADC, CCS, CPRS, etc.).


    Continuing Education Documentation


    Proof of 40 hours of continuing education (CEUs).


    Must include:


    3 hours in Ethics


    3 hours in Cultural Diversity


    (For CCS only): 6 hours in Clinical Supervision


    Certificates, transcripts, or provider letters must be attached.


    Documentation of In-Service Training (if applicable)


    Up to 20 of the 40 hours may be from in-service training.


    Must be signed and verified by your supervisor.


    Letter of Recommendation


    Completed by your current supervisor (or a professional peer if you are in private practice).


    Included in the recertification packet.


    Signed Code of Ethics (if applicable)


    Some credentials (like CCS) require you to re-sign the Code of Ethics upon renewal.
